LABOUR leader Jeremy Corbyn congratulated Arsenal today after the club won their first Women’s Super League title for the first time since 2012.

The Gunners had four different goalscorers as they overcame Brighton on the road and Mr Corbyn, an avid Arsenal supporter, took to Twitter to praise the team for a stellar season.

He wrote: “Congratulations to @ArsenalWFC on winning the Women’s Super League.

“They scored some brilliant goals today, have been fantastic all season and deserve to retain the #FAWSL title for the first time since 2012.

“A real inspiration, especially to girls looking to get into football.”

A record crowd for a WSL game, 5,265 fans turned up at Brighton’s Falmer Stadium, witnessed Vivianne Miedema opening the scoring with her 22nd goal of the season after six minutes, the Dutch striker hitting a thunderous shot from the edge of the area which went in off the underside of the crossbar.

And the 22-year-old then turned provider after half an hour, setting up teammate Katie McCabe to double the visitors’ lead at the Amex Stadium.

Beth Mead made it 3-0 with a superb long-range effort and Danielle Van De Donk completed the rout in front of a record crowd of 5,265.

Miedema told BT Sport after the final whistle: “I came to Arsenal to win the league. I don’t think it’s sunk in yet. I’m just happy to help the team, and we knew if we scored early it would be an easier game. The manager has made us believe in ourselves and I think that’s shown this season.

“I’m happy we’ve done it and we’ve done it with a 4-0 win. Joe [Montemurro] changed a lot when he came in, so he has to take a lot of credit, but more than anything he really made us believe in ourselves.”

Fellow goalscorer Mead added: “It’s hard to describe right now but it’s been a long time coming — everyone’s ecstatic.

“Joe says we’ve had a lot of ups and downs as a group with injuries and things like that so enjoy the moment.

“It’s indescribable. Everyone’s buzzing. It’s been a long time coming and I think we’ve deserved it this season. The manager told us at the end to enjoy the moment, and we will!”

Manager Joe Montemurro hailed his side for winning the league but quickly turned his attention to retaining it next season.

“There’s a lot of emotion. I’m proud of the players and the way they’ve gone about it this year. I’m already thinking about next year and making sure we stay at the top. The WSL is a very tough league, and we’ve needed to be adaptable.”

Kim Little added: “We’re extremely proud and honoured to win the league again. The togetherness among the squad, including the injured players, is what’s brought us success this season.”
