Syrian war Russia claims to have killed four Isis commanders

Russian warplanes have killed four Isis commanders in Syria, including one linked to the 2015 Paris attacks, the Defence Ministry in Moscow claimed yesterday.

The ministry said its jets had bombed an underground Isis command centre on the edge of the eastern city of Deir Ezzor on Tuesday, claiming to have killed 40 jihadists.

Officials said that Isis leaders were suspected to be meeting there in response to the Syrian army breaking the four-year siege on Deir Ezzor.

The claimed dead included “emir of Deir Ezzor” Abu-Muhammad al-Shimali, for whom the US government had set a $5 million bounty.

“Several European intelligence agencies” believed Mr Shimali was involved in the Paris attacks, the Russians said.

Isis “war minister” Gulmurod Khalimov, for whom $3m had been offered, was reportedly injured.

The former Tajikistan special forces commander received US counterterrorism training before joining Isis in 2014.
