21st Century Poetry Rochdale cowboy sonnet

by Alistair Findlay

Gorgeous, the new Rochdale cowboy,
rode into town and shot up the sheriff,
both barrels, both cheeks of the same back
side, Sir Keir, wooden as hobby-horse
shite, praying the Returning Officer will do
another Sir Lesley Hoyle turnabout on George
for not following Sir Keir’s script
for openly declaring he is a socialist
for accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza
for ignoring Sir John Curtice’s predictions
for giving the British electorate some hope
for getting the support of the Morning Star newspaper
for demanding Corbyn becomes Minister of Peace
for the next Labour-Workers Party Government

Alistair Findlay is co-editor of poetry for the Morning Star
