International Diplomacy Pakistan summons US ambassador over Trump Taliban tweet

PAKISTAN’S government angrily summoned Washington’s ambassador yesterday over US President Donald Trump’s accusation that it had given sanctuary to the Afghan Taliban.

The row erupted after Mr Trump tweeted on New Year’s Day that the US had “foolishly given Pakistan more than $33 billion (£24bn) in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies and deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools.

“They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more,” he said.

Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif hit back on Monday, saying: “America is frustrated over defeat in Afghanistan.

“America should take the path of dialogue instead of using military might in Afghanistan.”

But Afghanistan’s ambassador to the US Hamdullah Mohib welcomed Mr Trump’s tweet as “a promising message to Afghans, who have suffered at the hands of terrorists based in Pakistan for far too long” — echoing his government’s frequent charges against Islamabad.
