A MOVEMENT to oppose President Donald Trump’s administration was launched online today, with plans to protest across the United States.
The movement has organised under the hashtags #buildtheresistance and #50501, which stands for 50 protests, 50 states, one day.
It is also critical of Project 2025, a hard-right play book for US government and society, publishing flyers with messages such as “reject fascism” and “defend our democracy.”
Many of the protests are planned at state capitol buildings, with some in other cities.
In a coffee shop near Michigan State Capitol in Lansing, organisers made banners with legends such as “No Deportations Ever!” and “Workers Unite!”
Kelsey Brianne, one of the organisers of Michigan's rally, said it was “a real grassroots effort.”
“I got involved because I knew that there was a need, and I knew what I could do,” she said on Tuesday.
“But also I want to look back and say that I did something — I didn’t just sit back.”
President Trump has signed a series of executive orders in the first weeks of his new term, ranging from trade and immigration to climate change.
While lawmakers from the Democratic Party have been slow to raise an effective opposition to Mr Trump, protests are beginning to ramp up across the US.
On Tuesday, hundreds of Los Angeles High School students walked out in support of immigrant’s rights and against deportations.
On Sunday, thousands of people marched against Mr Trump’s plan for large-scale deportations in Southern California, including in central Los Angeles, where protests shut down a major motorway for hours.
Also on Sunday around 2,000 demonstrators gathered in Dallas, Texas in a pair of protests against deportations.
