MSP Mark Mcdonald suspended from Holyrood for a month

MSP Mark McDonald, who admitted behaving inappropriately towards women, is set to be suspended from Holyrood for a month.

The Scottish Parliament’s standards committee announced the proposed sanction yesterday after saying it agreed with the Scottish standards commissioner’s finding that Mr McDonald breached the code of conduct for MSPs.

The commissioner had said Mr McDonald failed to treat one woman with respect by actions including sexual harassment and he also failed to treat a second witness with respect "in relation to a financial matter."

Standards committee convener Clare Haughey said the committee was recommending that Mr McDonald be suspended for a month without pay.

The Scottish Parliament will vote on whether this sanction is imposed.

Asked whether Nicola Sturgeon would support the sanction, a government spokesman said the First Minister had yet to read the full findings, but that he “can’t think of any circumstances in which she personally would disagree” with the recommendations.
