THE Metropolitan Police spent over £1 million pursuing a criminal investigation against the former complaints body commissioner for challenging them over issues in the force, reports show.
Jennifer Izekor was one of the few black people to have held the post in the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and was investigating alleged police racism involving the tasering of a black firefighter in 2011.
Ms Izekor was accused of wilfully abusing her power by three Met police officers involved in the tasering.
All three were eventually cleared of any wrongdoing.
Ms Izekor told Channel 4 News: “The Met turned its guns on me because I dared to challenge them on a number of issues.
“And they were not prepared to stop shooting until I was actually completely obliterated.
“I think among other things, that was just a monumental waste of taxpayers’ money — fundamentally they knew that what they were accusing me of I hadn’t done.
“And it goes to the heart of a culture that seems to respond to challenge and criticism in a specific way.”
The Met said the allegations made were serious and it is only right that they be subject to a full investigation.
