SCOTTISH LABOUR has claimed that both of Scotland’s governments at Holyrood and Westminster are “sleepwalking towards disaster” on the Grangemouth closure.

Petroineos plans to close its refinery at the site by 2025, but workers there have continued to raise concerns about the lack of a just transition plan for the key site.

Quizzed by Scottish Labour’s Daniel Johnson on the situation, SNP Just Transition Minister Gillian Martin said: “Petroineos is making commercial decisions.

“It would not be fair to air in public what those commercial decisions have been based on because that is confidential.”

Mr Johnson said: “The jobs, skills, and infrastructure the site provides are central to Scotland’s economy and they will be key to unleashing Scotland’s clean energy potential.

“SNP and the Tories are sleepwalking towards disaster, and workers are set to pay the price.”

Speaking to the Star, Unite officer Lorna Robertson accused the Scottish government of having “no concern for the workers and no concerns for fuel security.

“We want the jobs that come with green energy to come to Grangemouth — but there’s a huge gap here because that won’t be before 2030 and they’re shutting down the plant next year. These skills will not be here,” she said.
