Glasgow bus workers overwhelmingly back strike action

MORE than 150 workers at First Bus Glasgow have overwhelmingly backed strike action after rejecting the multinational’s latest pay offer.

A near-unanimous 96 per cent of Unite members at First Glasgow (No1) voted to strike, while 100 per cent of their comrades in First Glasgow (No2) voted to join them.

Workers and their union argue the offer of around 13 per cent does not reflect company profitability as the two departments made a combined £4 million last year.

They say it also fails to reflect the real-terms pay cuts inflicted on workers last year while First Group executive director Ryan Mangold saw his package balloon to £3.1 million.

Unite industrial officer Pat McIlvogue said: “Support for strike action by our First Bus engineers is rock solid.

“Talks with Acas are scheduled for next week but if there is not a breakthrough, we will have no hesitation to issue strike notices.

“Our members deserve far more than what’s been offered.

“First Bus has one last opportunity to make a fair offer before any strike action starts.”

A First Bus spokesperson said: “We are meeting with union representatives next week under the auspices of Acas to work together to reach a resolution.”
