Fuel Poverty Action hosts event in Parliament to demand minimum energy guarantee

FUEL poverty campaigners hosted an event in Parliament today to push the demand for a minimum guarantee of energy for every household.

Some 30 MPs were set to attend the Fuel Poverty Action event to discuss the proposal for radical reform in energy pricing structure following a short rally outside Westminster.

More than 200 organisations including trade and tenants’ unions, environmental NGOs and community groups and elected officials have backed the measures in the campaign group’s Energy For All manifesto.

Speaking ahead of the event as Ecotricity became the first energy supplier to add its backing to manifesto, Fuel Poverty Action’s Ruth London said: “It is beyond obvious that the energy pricing system needs to be turned on its head to prevent further deaths and misery while profits soar.

“Energy For All already has massive popular support, and today is the day for MPs to give it the attention it deserves.”

Ecotricity’s founder Dale Vince said: “It’s entirely possible to shift the burden further up the income and consumption scale and provide a basic amount of energy for all.”

Despite Ofgem lowering the energy price cap this week, bills remain far higher than in previous years leaving up to a quarter of households in fuel poverty, the campaign group said.

End Fuel Poverty Coalition co-ordinator Simon Francis said: “Britain’s broken energy system leaves millions of people in cold damp homes every year.

“We need to see fundamental reform for how we pay for our energy to protect the most vulnerable and ensure fairness for all customers.

“But tariff reform is only part of the solution, we also need the government to ramp up investment in the energy efficiency of homes and changes to the grid and infrastructure to ensure we can all benefit from cheaper renewable energy into the future.”
