First Minister's Questions celebrates Eluned Morgan's 20th session as leader

FIRST Minister Eluned Morgan celebrated her 20th Senedd Questions today, using the session to urge support for her government’s Budget.

Welsh Conservative leader Darren Millar pushed Ms Morgan to say sorry to farmers for Westminster’s revised inheritance tax rules.

“When you were asked about changes to inheritance tax on farms, you suggested that it’s only very wealthy people that would have to pay, but both you and I know that that is not the case,” Mr Millar said, adding:  “Will you now apologise to Welsh farmers for that broken promise?”

The First Minister sidestepped the question, merely replying it was up to the Westminster government to defend its policies.

But she did say Chancellor Rachel Reeves was trying to ensure rich investors who were abusing the system were prevented from taking advantage of tax loopholes.

Mr Millar pressed the point, saying that Ms Morgan had failed to give any clarity on the Welsh government’s position.

“No matter what you try to say in order to spin this issue, the truth is this — these changes are going to cost lives and livelihoods in rural Wales.”

Ms Morgan hit back at the Tory leader, saying: “What I can tell you is, in the Budget that we’ll be voting on today, there will be £350 million for agricultural support and you will be voting against it.

“Don’t come to me and say that you’re speaking up for the agricultural community, because if it doesn’t go through today, you will have to account to them, because that money will be cut.”
