First Minister confirms Welsh government continues to call for truce in Gaza

Eluned Morgan asked to call for release of Dr Hussam Abu Safiyya in FMQs

WALES First Minister Eluned Morgan confirmed today that her government was continuing to call for a truce in Gaza.

Plaid Cymru’s Sioned Williams told the Senedd during First Minister’s Questions that people gathered outside major hospitals in Wales over the new year to draw attention to health workers who had been killed, injured or imprisoned by Israel's armed forces in Gaza.

The Plaid member for South Wales West said the vigils also called on the Welsh government to speak out.

“Will you listen on behalf of the people of Wales and condemn Israel’s attacks on hospitals in Gaza, and call on the UK government to demand the release of Dr Hussam Abu Safiyya and every health worker illegally detained by Israel?” Ms Williams asked.

Ms Williams also urged the FM to add the country’s voice to the Scottish government’s call for peace and justice in Palestine, calling on the Westminster government to cease arms sales to Israel until a permanent and robust ceasefire has been agreed.

The First Minister said the Welsh government’s international strategy promotes Wales as a globally responsible nation, including human rights, and she told the Senedd she had raised Gaza at a recent Ireland-Britain summit, where the Prime Minister was present.

“I'm sure everyone is pleased to see that there are possible signs that a truce is perhaps going to be possible and I will also ensure that my voice is heard as someone anxious to see peace,” Ms Morgan said.
