Chorus members at Welsh National Opera to take industrial action this week

OPERA chorus members have decided on further industrial action at the Welsh National Opera (WNO) this week.

Equity said chorus members voted unanimously to take further action short of a strike, targeting performances on February 27 and March 1.

Industrial action has already been taken by the WNO chorus with members wearing #SaveOurWNO T-shirts during performances, as well as leafleting audience members about why they are taking industrial action.

Equity’s Wales officer Simon Curtis said: “Although negotiations are progressing, the chorus’s decision to take further industrial action shows that there is much that needs protecting.

“Removing the threat of compulsory redundancy altogether is the only guaranteed way our dispute will be resolved.”

Last week, the Welsh government announced a £4.4 million boost to the budget for arts and culture, but Equity said previous cuts have reduced arts funding in Wales by 40 per cent in real terms since 2010.

The union said its members will be balloted again to extend the strike mandate.
