PEP GUARDIOLA allowed himself a rare smile as he reflected on a hard-fought victory over Chelsea in which his title favourites Manchester City overcame their toughest test of the season.
A second-half goal from playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, a powerful drive from the edge of the penalty area, was enough to see off Antonio Conte’s reigning champions.
He was effusive in his praise for the 26-year-old Belgian, who failed to make the cut at Stamford Bridge early in his career.
“He can do absolutely everything. He is a guy that can play in different positions, up the channels, assists short and long and then he is the most humble and most shy guy,” said the City boss, whose side rose back above city rivals United to the Premier League summit.
“He is a guy that if you ask to run 100 kilometres (62 miles) for the team he will do it. It is not easy to find that in this kind of talent.
“He’s one of our captains, I think he has made a step forward and people feel confident having him on the pitch.”
It was a bad day all round for Conte’s men who were arguably matching their opponents up until they lost in-form striker Alvaro Morata to a hamstring injury.
Chelsea’s lack of firepower became apparent as Morata’s replacement Willian took his role in a formation lacking a striker. It was not pleasant viewing for the home faithful.
Chelsea did double over Manchester City last season but this performance from Guardiola’s men was far more resolute.
“I don’t know, honestly, what happened in the past,” said the Italian manager Conte, when asked about the influence of De Bruyne. “But for sure we are talking about a top player, the complete player. He’s good — technical, fast, and he works hard for his team. He is the complete player.”
Soon after the goal, Conte rolled the dice and made a double switch by bringing on strikers Michy Batshuayi and Pedro. It appeared to stir the home side. However, it was all too late as the visitors saw off their efforts and held on easily for the victory.
“We played against a really good team,” said Conte. “We created chances but didn’t take them and in this type of game it’s very important to score first. Great compliments to Manchester City.”
