Campaigners halt demolition of cherished community building

ACTIVISTS from Oxford’s Community Solidarity Centre (CSC) celebrated a “major victory” today after a county court blocked the demolition of a cherished community building.

Plans to knock down the East Oxford Games Hall were suspended after the group occupied the building on Monday.

A CSC spokesman said that the court had ordered that no demolition work could take place at the site until a final hearing on the council’s right to possession, due on August 8.

An interim possession order was also granted, meaning that the occupiers must leave the site within 24 hours.

“This is a major victory, which means the council’s attempted social vandalism of the much-cherished East Oxford Games Hall site has been put on hold by the court for at least six weeks,” the CSC said.

Oxford City Council has been approached for comment.
