21st Century Poetry The Covid Front Line Song

by Peter Branson

Could be the colour of your skin,
Your sex or what you weigh.
The truth is more straightforward though,
No matter what They say.

Chorus:
It’s quality of life that counts,
Bad housing, poverty,
Poor workers who’ve been sacrificed,
That’s plain for all to see.

The folk who keep us moving,
Driving taxi, bus or train,
The supermarket staff who man
The tills and take the strain.

The picker in the warehouse who’s
On less than minimum wage,
The toiler in the sweatshop and
Skilled worker at the lathe.

The folk who run the corner shop
From dawn till late at night,
The tradesman we call out to fix
Our water, heat or light.

The care nurse on the Covid ward,
The front line ambulance crew,
True sacrifice, so much done for
So many by so few.

Some can’t afford to isolate,
Those living day-to-day,
Not even when they’re feeling ill,
No savings, bills to pay.

Chorus:
It’s quality of life that counts,
Bad housing, poverty,
Poor workers who’ve been sacrificed,
That’s plain for all to see.
