BRITAIN'S economy is on “life support” and a change in government is the only way out, union leaders said today after yet another dismal set of figures showed zero financial growth.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said GDP, which measures the value of goods and services produced in Britain, flatlined from July to September.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Our economy is on life support.
“Both the government and the opposition appear determined to stick to real-terms spending cuts, so there’s no good news for hard-pressed workers.
“In the real world workers and communities know how the economy is doing — they can feel it.
“It’s time for politicians to decide whose side they’re on and make the changes the economy needs.”
The statistics, published today, come a week after the Bank of England warned Britain could face zero growth until 2025.
TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: “Working people are paying the price for Tory failure.
“We need a serious plan for jumpstarting our stagnant economy. That means a proper industrial strategy and investment in green infrastructure and public services.
“And this means a change of government.”
Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves said: “These figures are further evidence that the economy is not working under the Conservatives and working people are worse off.”
The number of UK billionaires has grown from 53 when the Tories came to power in 2010 to 177 in 2022.
The Trussell Trust, which supports more than half of Britain’s food banks, had around 35 such sites in 2010-11. Today it has almost 1,400.
At least 1,172 more are operated independently by churches, charities and other organisations.
