SUPPORT staff at Barnsley College in South Yorkshire escalated their campaign of action as they began a five-day strike over pay today.
Workers at the further education college voted overwhelmingly for strike action in May and took action in September and October.
Unison has accused management of refusing to negotiate.
The union said that the college has received money from a £500 million government fund for colleges, but due to its refusal to negotiate, Unison does not know how bosses intends to spend it, the union said.
Unison Yorkshire & Humberside regional organiser Robin Symonds said: “As bills and other living costs continue to rise, Barnsley College refuses to negotiate a pay deal with its staff.
“Support staff at the college don’t want to be standing on a cold picket line all week, but the college’s refusal to discuss pay means they’re left with no choice.”
The college was invited to comment.
