Women made up more than half of all violent crime victims in last three years

WOMEN made up more than half the victims of all violent crime in the last three years, Labour analysis of recorded crime data revealed yesterday.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures also show that women make up more than four-fifths of the complainants in all sexual offences and rapes reported to the police.

Labour slammed the government for failing to adopt measures on issues ranging from street harassment to unequal sentencing for domestic homicides and steps needed to drive up rape conviction rates.

After a decade of cuts, delay and inaction, Labour is urging the government to work with the party to bring forward legislation to tackle violence against women.

Shadow domestic violence and safeguarding minister Jess Phillips said: “We need a step change not just in the criminal justice system but throughout society — and that needs real government backing.

“The Tories need to stop wasting time on gimmicks and get serious about tackling the epidemic of violence women and girls are facing.”

She called the new proposed Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill “the equivalent of a ‘get out of jail free’ card.”
