Vulnerable teachers quitting jobs in Scotland because they don't feel safe at work, union finds

TEACHERS in Scotland at particular risk from coronavirus are quitting their jobs because they feel unsafe at work during the pandemic, a union report reveals today.

They are taking early retirement or deciding not to take temporary “supply” jobs, according to the report by the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS).

The union surveyed 3,500 teachers in vulnerable or at-risk groups such as pregnant women.

Key issues identified include teachers believing that protections from Covid-19 are either not strong enough or impossible to enforce and that management of the pandemic has increased physical and mental ill health.

One pregnant teacher said: “I don't feel I have been supported at all whilst being pregnant during the pandemic and having to return to full-time work. 

“I am currently 30 weeks’ pregnant and feel very unsafe. My mental health is being seriously impacted.”

EIS general secretary Larry Flanagan said: “Teachers in vulnerable and at-risk groups are deeply worried about the risks to their health of working in a crowded classroom environment during the pandemic.”
