TRIBUTES were paid to former Labour MP Alice Mahon at her memorial service in Halifax today.
The late Ms Mahon, who died on December 25 aged 85, represented Halifax in West Yorkshire for almost 20 years.
She was among left MPs in the Commons who worked together, including Bob Cryer, Tony Benn and former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
Mr Corbyn told the congregation in Halifax Minster that Mahon was a dear friend and socialist who lived her life according to her principles.
“She was incredibly strong-minded,” he told more than 100 people attending the memorial.
“She did not let Parliament’s ways hold her back.”
He told how Mahon went to Belgrade during the Balkans conflict to show opposition to Nato bombing of the city and was a constant campaigner for peace.
“She was fearless and utterly determined,” he said.
