Tories struggling to hold Chesham and Amersham seat in by-election, say Lib Dems

VOTING opened today in the Chesham and Amersham by-election.

The Lib Dems claim the battle for the Buckinghamshire constituency, in Tory hands since its creation in 1974, “is neck and neck,” as the party sees a huge surge in the area — signalling “a shock” for the Conservatives. A result is expected tomorrow.

The by-election, triggered by the death of incumbent MP Dame Cheryl Gillan in April, sees eight hopefuls facing off, with former Ford executive and Tory candidate Peter Fleet and entrepreneur Sarah Green for the Lib Dems the frontrunners.

Party leader Sir Ed Davey has been a regular fixture locally during the campaign, while Prime Minister Boris Johnson also made an appearance.

Dame Cheryl, the former Welsh secretary, took the seat with a majority of over 16,000 in the 2019 general election, more than half the vote. Labour, which polled third, is represented this time by Natasa Pantelic.

Carolyne Culver is standing for the Green Party, Brendan Donnelly for Rejoin EU, Alex Wilson for Reform UK, Carla Gregory for Breakthrough Party and Adrian Oliver for Freedom Alliance.
