Stagecoach bus drivers and engineers to vote on strike action over pay

STAGECOACH bus drivers and engineers in Wales will begin voting on Tuesday on a call for strike action after privateer bosses refused to give them pay parity with workers at a neighbouring depot.

The firm has told members of the GMB and Unite unions at its Merthyr Tydfil depot that equal pay with workers at Porth just 20 minutes away is “unaffordable.”

GMB voting begins tomorrow, while Unite is consulting its members.

GMB organiser Gareth Morgans said: “It can’t be right that, wearing the same uniform, driving the same buses, you earn £1 less per hour than colleagues working 20 minutes away at another depot.

“We think that the Porth rate should be the going rate for drivers and engineers at all six of Stagecoach depots across the valleys.

“Let’s not forget that, throughout the pandemic, it was the Stagecoach drivers, not the Stagecoach shareholders, who were put at risk to keep our country ticking over. It’s time they got the fair treatment and reward they deserve.”
