THE Scottish government came under pressure from opposition MSPs at Holyrood today over its impending decision on school closures over the festive period.
Education Secretary John Swinney was quizzed by his Labour shadow Iain Gray on speculation that the Christmas break north of the border could be extended to protect staff and school communities.
Mr Gray said that a decision must be made as quickly as possible, while questioning how such a measure would be implemented and calling on ministers to “show some working” on the decision-making process.
“We are in December now. Parents, teachers, head teachers need to know,” he said.
Green MSP Ross Greer also demanded to know whether the information and modelling used would be published to allow scrutiny.
Mr Swinney said that every effort is being made to avoid “any sense of learning loss,” but that the well-being of everyone involved had to be considered and no final decision had yet been taken.
