Security guards protest poverty wages after ‘being paid a pittance by fabulously wealthy’

SECURITY guards at London’s world-famous New Covent Garden Market are “being paid a pittance by fabulously wealthy” contractor OCS, Unite activists said today as they staged a protest.

Members of the union demonstrated outside Manchester City Football Club, where the firm has a major services contract.

The 22 workers – who help ensure the safety of visitors to the market in Nine Elms – are missing out on the London living wage and receive just £9.69 an hour, said Unite, noting that the firm reports annual sales of close to £1 billion a year.

The union also accused bosses of “refusing to accept the workers’ trade union rights” by rejecting their requests for Unite to be their official workplace representative.

General secretary Sharon Graham said: “It’s scandalous that a wealthy company is paying workers in London a pittance.

“So Unite is taking its protest to other cities where OCS operates to expose how this company treats workers.”

Ms Graham demanded “fair pay” and basic union rights for the staff, who have taken intermittent strike action since September.

The firm has been contacted for comment.
