Scottish Greens demand end to tax breaks for shooting estates

THE Scottish Greens have called on Scotland’s government to end its tax breaks to shooting estates.

Green finance spokesman Ross Greer has demanded that the estates be excluded from the SNP’s small business bonus scheme (SBSS).

Tom Arthur, minister for community wealth and public finance, described the SNP’s business tax-break as the “the most generous scheme of its kind in the UK” during a parliamentary statement on non-domestic rates.

But Mr Greer drew on analysis by the Scottish Parliament Information Centre in 2020, revealing that 90 per cent of Scotland’s 13,705 shooting estates had been valued at under £15,000 and were receiving the tax subsidy.

He said: “Does the minister agree that shooting estates simply should not be eligible for such a tax break?”

Mr Arthur responded: “I acknowledge Ross Greer’s views on these matters, and am keen to discuss them with him as part of my ongoing engagement on Non-Domestic Rates with members of all political parties.”
