Rail managers call police to picket line in Merseyside

POLICE were called to a rail workers’ picket line in Merseyside on Saturday to help managers cross, so they could gain access to a control centre and mount scab services.

Strikers and supporters were staging a protest outside Sandhills station in Liverpool where the centre is located.

Managers have been mounting a skeleton service during RMT strikes, although 80 per cent of services have been cancelled.

But on Saturday, Merseyrail services were at a 100 per cent standstill and management called the police.

RMT North West regional organiser Darren Ireland said: “There was a peaceful picket line at Sandhills that caused a delay to services.

“Police attended to assist management going into work.

“I don’t see that as their role, to be honest. There were no problems and it was low-key.”

Merseyrail acting managing director Jane English said: “Services across the Merseyrail network were suspended for around 90 minutes due to a protest taking place outside the Network Rail control room in Liverpool.”
