BOOS from the Liverpool section of Wembley Stadium greeted William Windsor and the song devoted to his grandmother at the FA Cup final on Saturday.
Some Merseyside reds have jeered the national anthem at football matches for years in protest against the ruling class’s long mistreatment of the city, its citizens, its football fans and those who died at Hillsborough.
The fans’ failure to show placid deference to Britain’s medieval institutions enraged the flag-wavers.
The Mail on Sunday — the paper owned by free speech advocate and aristocrat Jonathan Harold Esmond Vere Harmsworth, fourth Viscount Rothermere — could not miss the opportunity to boil its readers’ piss by dedicating its front page to the “shameful abuse hurled” at the Prince.
Others, however, were impressed by the fans’ antics.
“Liverpool fans booing the national anthem today, rejecting blind patriotism and the establishment, is right up there with them clapping Ronaldo in the seventh minute,” former Unite general secretary candidate Howard Beckett wrote on Twitter.
“Pure quality from socialist fans.”
