Labour urged not to snub social workers in its manifesto

LABOUR has been urged not to snub social workers in its manifesto after it emerged they do not get a single mention in the party’s 86-page national policy forum report.

Social Workers Union general secretary John McGowan and British Association of Social Workers chief executive Dr Ruth Allen said they were disappointed at the omission and asked for a meeting with Labour’s front bench.

They highlighted in a letter “the vital role social workers play. We would urge party policy-makers to address this situation.”

They added they had not received a response after writing to shadow health secretary Wes Streeting to urge him include reform of social work bursaries for students in the manifesto.

The national policy forum said it would “inform Labour’s policy proposals ahead of the next general election.”

Social work received only a few references in a 64-page Fabian Society’s National Care Service proposals requested by Mr Streeting.

Labour has been contacted for comment.
