Labour to introduce new Fair Work Charter

THE best way for working people to help themselves is by joining a union, Labour metro mayor Tracy Brabin said today.

Organised workforces are better for the “greater good,” the West Yorkshire mayor told delegates at a GMB conference fringe event in Harrogate.

Ms Brabin, who is chairwoman of the influential M10 group of Labour regional leaders, introduced her new Fair Work Charter.

The document, set to be published later this year, aims to encourage better pay, fair and flexible working conditions and greater diversity within the workforce.

The former Batley and Spen MP said that the charter, put together following consultations with workers, unions and employers, shows how Labour can “make a difference today.”

She said: “The charter is a tool to make sure we’ve got everybody with us, to make sure we’ve got more money in people’s pockets.

“We’re going to work really closely with the trade union movement and GMB, whose support is ongoing and so valued for me.”

The union’s regional organiser Pete Davies praised the document’s focus on public-sector procurement and collective bargaining, saying it had the “welfare of workers” at its heart.
