Labour intends to forge ‘a different path’ on foreign policy, Lammy tells conference

DAVID LAMMY said today that Labour intends to forge “a different path” on foreign policy when it forms the next government.

The shadow foreign secretary said as Russia continues to wage war “we will create a special tribunal to prosecute Putin for his crimes.”

He told conference: “Every time the Conservatives come to office, they take our foreign policy backwards.

“They were wrong in the 1980s to support apartheid in South Africa.

“They were wrong in the 1990s with their endless damaging quarrels about Europe.

“They were wrong in the 2010s when they created a hostile environment for the Windrush generation.”

Mr Lammy told conference that the Tories were wrong again by “cutting aid as millions face starvation across the globe” and, he said, attacking the European Convention on Human Rights.”

The Tottenham MP said that he also wanted to introduce a “green dimension” to our foreign policy.

He said that Labour would “push for climate action to become a fourth pillar of the United Nations.”

Mr Lammy also said that he wanted to restore a “moral compass” to Britain’s foreign policy.

He told conference: “British shelves will never be stocked with the products of modern slavery. We will end cotton imports from Xinjiang.”

The section of the agenda at conference, called Britain in the World, was opened by Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko.
