A YORKSHIRE council is set to shed 750 jobs, saying that it needs to balance its budget after years of Tory cuts.
The jobs are to go at Kirklees District Council, which is based on the town of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire.
The council branch of public-sector union Unison said that its members will ballot on industrial action if compulsory redundancies are imposed.
Council chief executive Jacqui Gedman said that the Labour-run council faces a budget shortfall of £47 million in the next financial year.
Unison branch chairman Nick Ruff said: “The council is not looking for volunteers or early retirements.
“Our position has been clear. If there is any announcement of compulsory redundancies we will immediately move to an industrial action ballot.”
Council chief executive Ms Gedman said in a statement: “At this stage we do not have a full breakdown of the directorates and roles impacted or the timings and we will, of course, be working with trade union colleagues to do everything we can to avoid compulsory redundancies.”
