THE sister of murdered MP Jo Cox has been selected to stand for Labour in a by-election for her constituency.
Kim Leadbeater will be the party’s candidate for the Batley & Spen seat in West Yorkshire, which her sister held from 2015 until June 16 2016, when she was murdered by neonazi fanatic Thomas Alexander Mair.
Labour’s Tracey Brabin resigned from the parliamentary seat when she was elected the first metropolitan mayor of West Yorkshire on May 6.
Ms Leadbeater said after her selection on Sunday evening: “I am overwhelmed and humbled by the support and faith from members in Batley & Spen.
“I’m ready to hit the ground running and take Labour’s campaign to local people.
“We need strong northern voices at Westminster, people rooted in their communities. I will work to represent people across the whole constituency.”
Ms Leadbeater has lived in the constituency all her life.
The by-election could decide the future of Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, following Labour’s defeat by the Conservatives in the Hartlepool by-election on May 6.
