Heineken to sack 8,000 workers worldwide

Unite to seek ‘urgent clarification from management on the impact in the UK’

GLOBAL brewery Heineken announced today that it is to sack 8,000 workers worldwide, including 100 in Britain.

The company blamed the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects on the hospitality industry.

In the UK 6,000 pubs, bars and other licenced premises have closed permanently through the pandemic lockdown.

Union Unite said the redundancies were “a matter of great concern.”

Heineken has breweries in Edinburgh, Hereford, Manchester and Tadcaster in north Yorkshire.

Unite national officer for the drinks industry Joe Clarke said: “This is very concerning news that Heineken, the world’s second-largest brewer, is axing 10 per cent of its global workforce.

“We understand that these job losses won’t affect our members working in the UK plants that brew beers and ciders, but will impact on marketing, sales and admin posts.

“However, we will be seeking urgent clarification from the Heineken management on the impact in the UK.”

A Heineken spokeswoman said: “Like many companies, the Covid pandemic has had a material impact on Heineken, in particular given the prolonged closure of the hospitality sector in 2020 and into 2021.”
