SCOTLAND faces a “perfect storm” and the NHS may struggle to cope with the after-effect of Christmas as hospitals are already working at near capacity, medical leaders have warned.
Members of the Scottish Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties have spoken out amid concerns that the health service may not be able to cope with a further surge in Covid-19 infections and could be “overwhelmed.”
In a statement, the group said the government should consider all possible measures with the possibility it could take months for vaccinations to have an impact on the spread of the virus.
The organisation also stressed the importance of the public playing their part.
They added: “The NHS and social care across Scotland are now on an emergency footing, with services already severely stretched.
“NHS staff are exhausted but are continuing to work hard to keep the public safe. We are gravely concerned that this could lead to the NHS being overwhelmed.”
