Staff at Falmouth University vote to strike over ‘two-tier workforce’

STAFF at Falmouth University have voted in favour of strike action after a dispute over the creation of a “two-tier workforce” at the university, the University and College Union (UCU) has said in a statement.

The union said 90 per cent of members who voted said Yes to strike action while the overall turnout was 62 per cent.

The vote follows a move by Falmouth University to create a subsidiary company called Falmouth Staffing Ltd (FSL) which it’s using to employ all new academic staff under worse terms and conditions than existing staff which includes reduced pension payments, the union said.

“The creation of a two-tier workforce has very serious implications for all staff, as the subsidiary company is not part of national bargaining arrangements between unions and the University and Colleges Employers Association,” UCU said.

A spokesperson for Falmouth University said: “We are disappointed by this news, but are continuing our conversations with UCU representatives.”
