Edinburgh Waverley station workers vote to strike

RMT says Wednesday's action is ‘all about respect and justice’ in the workplace

RAIL union RMT has confirmed that a strike by workers in Edinburgh will go ahead on Wednesday after its members voted overwhelmingly in favour of the walkout.

Industrial action will take place at Edinburgh Waverley, the main station in the Scottish capital, after concerns were raised about a culture of bullying and harassment faced by on-train catering staff.

The RMT says that Rail Gourmet workers based at the station have given their full backing to the strike, which is due to end at 6am Thursday morning. There will be a picket line on Market Street on Wednesday.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said that the strike was “all about respect and justice” in the workplace and the company’s continued refusal, even in the face of a massive 100 per cent vote for strike action, to “do anything about it.”

He said: “A culture of bullying and harassment has been allowed to develop at Edinburgh Waverley which has led to a wholesale breakdown in industrial relations and our members have had enough.

“It’s now down to Rail Gourmet to listen to the strength of feeling of its workers and address these long-running and deep-seated issues.”

A Rail Gourmet spokeswoman said staff wellbeing is paramount and any allegations are taken very seriously.

She said the company were disappointed a strike had been called following requests for evidence of bullying and harassment.
