EasyJet passengers at Gatwick to face ‘spring misery,’ union warns

DHL ground handlers to ballot for strike action over pay dispute

EASYJET passengers at Gatwick face “spring misery,” Unite warned yesterday, as DHL ground handlers are balloted for strike action in a pay dispute.

The 500-plus workforce are seeking sizeable wage increases after successive pay freezes in 2020 and last year.

The German logistics giant banked profits of €4.8 billion (£4bn) in 2020, but employees are seeing their real-terms wages plummet as living costs rise, Unite stressed.

The union said tensions are running high after bosses issued an ultimatum for staff to accept a 8.32 per cent pay rise or risk it being withdrawn.

The offer fails to make up for years of stagnating wages and spiralling inflation, Unite said.

Walkouts could begin in the spring if workers back industrial action, the union confirmed, with a result due on Monday February 14.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Our members are simply seeking a fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work.

“With the cost-of-living crisis squeezing already stretched family budgets, DHL must drop its bully-boy tactics and make a fair offer to our members.”

The company has been contacted for comment.
