Disabled man and brother face eviction after parents die of Covid

A DISABLED man and his brother face eviction from their council home following the deaths of both their parents from Covid-19.

Sean Brogan, 34, and his brother Andrew, 32, live in Skelmersdale in Lancashire. Andrew has Asperger’s syndrome and cannot care for himself.

On March 19 2020 their father died from Covid-19.

Sean, who is a computer programmer, moved into the family home after their father’s death to help his mother care for Andrew.

On November 18 last year their mother, who was formally the tenant, died on the floor of their kitchen.

After her death, West Lancashire Borough Council sent an eviction notice to the brothers, with a Boxing Day deadline.

“We received a notice to quit by December 26,” he said.

The brothers remain in the house and are going through an appeal process with the council.

The house has been the family home for more than 60 years. Andrew has lived there all his life with his mother as his main carer.

A campaign is building in north-west England against the eviction. Groups supporting it include Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC).

Linda Burnip of DPAC said: “What are the council going to do? Kick them out onto the street?

“We have got evidence from doctors and social services explaining why it is so important for someone who has autism to have stability — not to be evicted from his home after 32 years. It is inhuman.”

Sean said: “All we want is to live in peace and try to finally mourn our parents.”

The council has been invited to comment.
