Tributes flood in for Diane Abbott as she marks 33 years as an MP

TRIBUTES to Diane Abbott flooded social media today on the 33rd anniversary of her election to Parliament, when she became Britain’s first black woman MP.

Ms Abbott was elected MP for Hackney North in 1987 and has since served in four shadow cabinets, most recently as home secretary.

Her unwavering support for socialism and campaigns for equal and civil rights were yesterday celebrated by her fellow MPs.

Bell Ribeiro-Addy, who worked for Mr Abbott for 10 years before becoming the MP for Streatham last year, described her as “my inspiration.”

“A socialist hero, she has never faltered on her principles, no matter the cost, and has always been on the right side of history,” she tweeted.

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: “She is an inspiration, a great friend and brilliant advocate of the ideals of equality, justice and socialism. Solidarity to Diane!”

Labour MP Richard Burgon said: “She’s always stood up for her constituents and continues to fearlessly speak truth to power, take on racism, oppose war and fight for socialism. We love her!”

The Hackney MP responded by thanking people for their “kind messages,” but added that 33 years later, “the struggle continues!”

The Labour Party today marked Ms Abbott’s election in 1987 along with Paul Boateng and Bernie Grant – the country’s first black MPs.
