THE creator of the iconic Obama Hope poster has donated art for an auction at London’s anti-arms fair exhibition.
Shepard Fairey is giving away three of his prints to raise money for a protest gallery set up to counter next month’s Defence & Security Equipment International (DSEI) jamboree in London.
Military delegations from some of the most repressive regimes will attend DSEI, which is one of the world’s largest arms fairs.
Mr Fairey said: “As an advocate for peace and justice and a strong believer in the role art can play in shaping dominant ideas in society, I’m proud to contribute to a show that shares my values along with a group of outspoken peers.”
Rhianna Louise from Art the Arms Fair said: “DSEI has the backing of the UK government and sponsorship from major arms companies.
“But we are exposing this bloodstained arms fair and raising funds to bring it down, armed with the immense creative power of artists like Shepard Fairey, Hito Steyerl, Peter Kennard and the Guerrilla Girls.”
The Art the Arms Fair exhibition will run from September 3 to 13 at the Maverick Projects, Peckham, south London.
