Burgon launches parliamentary Bill to place ‘urgent ban’ on arms sales to Israel

LEFT Labour MP Richard Burgon launched a parliamentary Bill today to place an urgent ban on arms sales to Israel.

The cross-party Bill, which would add Israel to the list of countries that face British arms restrictions, was submitted with support Green MP Caroline Lucas, Plaid’s Liz Saville Roberts and the SNP’s Tommy Sheppard.

It follows May’s military assault by the Israeli army on Gaza, which killed more than 250 Palestinians, left thousands more injured and displaced over 100,000 people.

Mr Burgon said: “Israel's recent war on the Palestinian people shows why it is time for the British government to place an urgent ban on all arms exports to Israel.

“The British government can’t claim to be supporting peace when it is actively helping to arm Israel.

“In fact, with hundreds of millions of pounds of arms exports in recent years, our government is complicit in Israel’s war on the Palestinian people.”

The Bill comes ahead of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign’s national lobby of Parliament tomorrow, which will call on MPs to back the ban on arms sales.
