Labour's Burgon calls for debate on royal inheritance tax avoidance

RICHARD BURGON called for a parliamentary debate during business questions today on whether future monarchs should remain exempt from paying inheritance tax on their private wealth.

Under a 1993 rule, inheritance tax is not paid on the transfer of private assets from one sovereign to another.

Charles Windsor inherited billions of pounds this month after his mother and late queen Elizabeth Windsor died.

Mr Burgon asked the Leader of the House Penny Mordaunt to allow for time for a discussion on why the royal family did not have to pay the tax.

The Labour MP said: “At the time [of the 1993 rule], the then leader of the opposition, the late John Smith asked: ‘Although it is accepted that assets held by the Queen as sovereign should not be liable to inheritance tax, will the Prime Minister explain why all private assets passing from one sovereign to the next should also be exempt?’

“I think this remains a legitimate question.”

Mr Burgon said he will continue calling for a parliamentary debate by writing to Ms Mordaunt.
