Biscuit workers want more than crumbs

BRITAIN could face a shortage of some of its favourite biscuits unless a pay dispute is sorted by factory bosses, a trade union has warned.

GMB has accused bosses at Burton’s Biscuits in Edinburgh of making a “derisory” pay offer, saying it shows management “do not value” the workers.

Union members at the site voted overwhelmingly for industrial action after management refused to increase a 1.6 per cent pay offer for the next year, with an indefinite work to rule and overtime ban set to begin from 2pm on Tuesday.

This action comes ahead of a series of 24-hour strikes throughout September, with the first starting at 6am on Wednesday, and others set for September 16 and 23.

Organiser Benny Rankin said: “Burton’s derisory pay offer holds a mirror up to this management – they clearly do not value the contribution of their staff and have no interest in recognising and rewarding them properly.”
