Activists smash doors at oil and gas research centre

ENVIRONMENTAL activists once again smashed the windows of a major oilfield exploration research facility outside Cambridge on Monday night.

The protest, organised by the 2022-founded This Is Not A Drill group, said its fourth demo at the Schlumberger Research Centre was due to the facility’s links to remote drilling, oil exploration and fracking research.

An anonymous activist said the centre’s “days are numbered, and they know it.

“They haven’t even repaired their windows since last time people struck there. We went to finish the job. The door’s wide open now — it’s time for them to leave.”

Another member of the group, which has also targeted sites in Oxford over the last year, slammed universities and the Tory government for failing to cut ties with fossil fuel companies which are driving human-induced climate change.

The activist said: “From Ecuador to Uganda, people have been talking for decades about the devastating impact of oil and gas extraction.

“[We are] taking direct action against these companies in the face of university and governmental failure to act.”

The facility was contacted for comment.
