TRADE unions have called for clarity after the First Minister announced that NHS and social care staff would receive a £500 “bonus payment” in Scotland.
The Scottish government announced the pro rata payment for workers on what was to be the eve of Unison’s NHS pay ballot opening today after months of campaigning.
The union has now called off the vote but has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting for a long-term increase in pay for health staff.
Unison’s head of health Willie Duffy said: “While this is a move in the right direction, we will now be focusing our efforts on ensuring a significant pay rise for our NHS workers in the forthcoming Agenda for Change pay talks.”
Unions GMB and Unite welcomed the move but questioned how the government planned to implement the roll-out.
Both unions said they were disappointed however that this was not a “permanent reward,” with GMB promising to pursue “significant pay claims.”
