Amazon facing further strikes as over 1,000 workers begin four-day action in Coventry

AMAZON faces further strikes as more than 1,000 workers began a four-day action in Coventry today.

As workers took to the picket line, the GMB union announced a strike ballot at the retail giant’s new flagship Birmingham fulfilment centre.

The Coventry strike will run on Wednesday and tomorrow as well as the Black Friday sales event on November 24, coming after workers rejected a measly £1 pay rise to their hourly pay of £11.80 for physically demanding 10-hour shifts.

GMB organiser Rachel Fagan said: “This is an unprecedented and historic moment with low-paid workers taking on one of the world’s most powerful corporations.

“This action will bring the total days lost at Amazon to strike action to nearly 30.

“Now we’re seeing industrial action snowballing with workers launching a new strike vote at Amazon Birmingham.

“With a winter of strike chaos looming, it’s time for Amazon bosses to urgently listen to their workers.”

An Amazon spokesperson claimed: “We offer competitive pay, comprehensive benefits, opportunities for career growth, all while working in a safe, modern work environment.

“At Amazon, these benefits and opportunities come with the job, as does the ability to communicate directly with the leadership of the company.”
