MIAMI Five hero Rene Gonzalez warned on Saturday that Havana must remain vigilant against US-based far-right terrorists
Speaking on a visit to Mexico, the recently released anti-terrorist fighter cautioned that the same groups that he and his four comrades had been jailed for exposing had never renounced violence.
“It is probable those groups will fade, become entrenched, but keep being there, ready to attack the island,” he said.
Mr Gonzalez was arrested along with fellow Cubans Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez in 1998 after exposing terror plots by Florida-based anti-communist Cuban emigre groups.
They were convicted in 2001 of crimes including murder and spent up to 16 years in jail — with few or no visits by their families allowed — until all were finally released and returned to Cuba last year in the new atmosphere of detente.
Mr Gonzalez also thanked the Mexican people for their solidarity with the five.
