Birthday boy Steven Naismith gave Roberto Martinez his first victory as Everton manager and inflicted a first defeat on Jose Mourinho since his return to the Premier League.

On the stroke of half-time Leon Osman crossed deep to Nikica Jelavic, who headed back across goal for the 27-year-old Scot to head into the roof of the net from point-blank range.

Chelsea wasted numerous chances throughout but a stellar performance from Everton’s new signing Gareth Barry, including a desperate goal-saving challenge on Chelsea debutant Samuel Eto’o after a mistake from goalkeeper Tim Howard, kept the visitors off the scoresheet to secure a famous victory.

Chelsea were lucky not to be reduced to 10 men when David Luiz, as the last man, hurled Kevin Mirallas to the floor, albeit just inside the Everton half.

Mourinho couldn’t decide whether his side deserved to win or lose.

“We didn’t deserve to lose because we were the best team,” said the Chelsea coach, “because we played the best football, dominated the whole game, because we had 21 shots and we risked everything we could. In that sense it is fair to say we deserved to win.

“The other way to look at it is that a team that has 21 shots, some of them easy shots and easy situations to score and then don’t score, maybe with that I should say we deserve to lose.”
