A FIREFIGHTER was pulled alive from the wreckage of the Tianjin explosion yesterday, after spending 32 hours trapped, as the death toll rose to 56.
Zhou Ti was recovered from the devastated zone at about dawn yesterday and taken to hospital to be treated for face, chest and foot injuries.
“I was knocked to the ground at the first blast,” he recalled. “I covered my head and don’t know what happened after that.”
The death toll included at least 21 firefighters among the more than 1,000 sent to the disaster.
Tianjin Fire Department head Zhou Tian said that the explosions had occurred just as newly arrived reinforcements were getting to work.
“There was no chance to escape and that’s why the casualties were so severe,” he said. “We’re now doing all we can to rescue the missing.”
The cause of the explosion was still not known yesterday.
